Ensō, the zen circle
My guests often ask what the meaning is of my circle in my logo, what is a zen circle or ensō.
The ensō (圓相) or “zen circle” is an interesting part of the Japanese calligraphy according to the teachinh of Hitsuzendō (筆禅道) school the ensō – the zen circle – is the one of the main part of the calligraphy.
This symbol has a huge meaning, but I try to tell it in a short version. 🙂
The ensō symbolizes absolute enlightenment, strength, elegance, the universe, and mu (“nothing”, pure human awareness, prior to experience or knowledge)
The ensō symbolizes a moment when the mind is free to simply let the body and spirit create.
Moreover, zen circles, ensō, are symbols of teaching, reality, enlightenment, and a myriad of things in between. Seemingly perfect in their continuity, balance, and sense of completeness, and yet often irregular in execution, ensō are at once the most fundamentally simple and the most complex shape. They seem to leave little room for variation, and yet in the hands of Zen masters, the varieties of personal expression are endless. Ensō evoke power, dynamism, charm, humor, drama, and stillness…
